5 String Theory

5 String Theory is a project by experimental violinist and composer Alexey Kochetkov, who explores the possibilities of violin and computer symbiosis and creates innovative neo classic and ambient music. By processing the violin with numerous loopers and effects, he crafts otherworldly soundscapes that seamlessly unite the instrument’s centuries-long tradition with contemporary sonic aesthetics.

Taking this concept one step further, Kochetkov presents his music in a 3D-sound format, creating a unique, immersive listening experience.

5 String Theory concerts are often site-specific, taking place in venues like churches or industrial halls, where the distinct acoustics and atmosphere guide the listener through a unique sonic and emotional journey.

Exercises for 5 String Violin

In addition to his work with violin and electronics, Kochetkov composes for the acoustic five-string violin. Modern five-string violins gained popularity in the 1960s and have since become favored by musicians in folk, jazz, pop, and rock genres. However, there is still relatively little written material available for the instrument. 5 String Theory addresses this gap, offering both introductory pieces for transitioning from four-string to five-string violins and more advanced compositions for experienced players.

Additionally, you can hear Kochetkov’s acoustic five-string violin on both albums of Ajam Quartet.
